Issues

Our town is more than just a place on a map or a destination featured in a travel magazine; it's our home, our community, and the foundation of our lives. As your mayoral candidate, I am committed to preserving the unique character of our small town while addressing the challenges we face and building a brighter future for all residents.

I have the vision and intimate knowledge of the issues facing us as we work to strengthen our community and improve our quality of life.

Affordable Housing and Beyond

Affordable housing is one of the biggest challenges facing our town—impacting families, essential workers, seniors, and local businesses alike. Too many people who call Friday Harbor home are being priced out or forced to live far from work and community.

I’ve heard directly from developers about frustrating permit delays, and from town officials about infrastructure and comprehensive plan limitations that slow progress. It’s clear we need a new approach—one that brings together residents, developers, and local leaders to develop practical, balanced solutions. Solutions that support growth while protecting the character and environment we cherish.

As mayor, I will lead with collaboration, transparency, and accountability—bringing all voices to the table, asking the tough questions, and making sure we deliver real results. Together, we can create affordable, equitable housing opportunities so that Friday Harbor remains a vibrant, inclusive community for everyone.

Improving our Infrastructure

Our town's infrastructure is the backbone of our community.  As your mayor, I pledge to make infrastructure a central focus—building a modern, efficient, and sustainable foundation for the future.

Friday Harbor’s charm lies in its close-knit community and unique, independent storefronts. However, to truly thrive, we must invest in infrastructure that prioritizes pedestrian safety, enhances walkability, and supports our aging storefronts. By focusing on the right improvements, we have the opportunity to make Friday Harbor safer, more walkable, and more supportive of local businesses—while preserving the character that makes it so special.

My commitment is to launch a comprehensive infrastructure assessment upon taking office, engaging with community stakeholders to prioritize projects and ensure transparency throughout the improvement process. I will actively pursue state and federal funding to maximize our investment and minimize the burden on local taxpayers.

Together, we can build a stronger, more vibrant, and more sustainable town for generations to come.

Economic Development

A resilient local economy and tax base is essential to maintaining the services and quality of life we all value in Friday Harbor. Supporting the small businesses that are already rooted here—and helping local entrepreneurs grow—should be at the heart of our strategy.

At the same time, we need to thoughtfully expand opportunities for year-round jobs that align with our island values and preserve our unique character. This means making it easier for small, locally minded businesses to navigate permitting, access resources, and find the skilled workforce they need. By investing in workforce development and encouraging the kinds of businesses that contribute to our community—not compete with it—we can strengthen our economy without compromising what makes this place special.

This work must be done with transparency, public input, and a commitment to preserving the beauty, culture, and character of Friday Harbor.

Community Engagement

Residents already have the opportunity to engage in public meetings, but we need to foster a broader culture of open communication, transparency, and connection beyond formal settings and toxic social media. At my coffee shop, I talk with people from all walks of life and across the political spectrum, and I’ve seen how much common ground we share when we take the time to listen. I want to bring that spirit of genuine conversation and collaboration into the mayor’s office — helping islanders feel less isolated and more supported.

Before moving to the island in 2016, my family and I spent 16 years in North Bothell, where we were fortunate to be part of a vibrant and diverse neighborhood. On warm evenings, I’d roll our firepit or BBQ out into the cul-de-sac, and before long, people from all backgrounds would gather — sharing food, stories, and community. Over time, we became a tight-knit group that showed up for each other in hard times. I’ve seen that same spirit here in Friday Harbor, especially when seniors or families are in crisis, but I also know there are still neighbors quietly falling through the cracks. We can do more — especially during the long, isolating winters — to ensure everyone feels connected, seen, and supported.

By partnering with nonprofits, schools, and community groups, we can create more opportunities for face-to-face connection, shared experiences, and collaboration. Together, we can build a stronger, more inclusive, and more compassionate community — not just in moments of crisis, but every day.
